Melody Williams, Head of Health Improvement for Children and Young People at South West Essex PCT

"We are proud to be the first PCT working with the Local Authority in the UK to take the lead in helping to address childhood obesity in this way. The model has the potential to be rolled out across the country and we’re very interested in exploring the outcomes as the project progresses. It’s a great way of getting schools and individual teachers working together to help address the growing issue of childhood obesity".
"PhunkyFoods has amassed a strong track record in delivering real health benefits without placing undue pressure on teachers or the curriculum and we look forward to reaping the benefits of the programme.
Teaching Assistant (taken from NFER findings)
"It’s that simple and that straightforward, you could pick it up just like that. A supply teacher could walk in and be able to do it how it should be done because it’s that simple to follow, because it’s broken down so well".
Parent / Carer (taken from NFER findings)
"They love doing the Phunky club, they really enjoy it and look forward to it. They like the combination of playing with food, and going outside and using up their energy. They’re absorbing it all when they’re outside, rather than just sitting in a classroom, which I think is great".
Healthy Schools Coordinator (taken from NFER findings)
"I think it’s a very good programme. It’s well structured. It’s built on each year and goes through the school. There is reinforcement without repetition. You can see the progression".
Pupil (taken from NFER findings)
"I used to eat too many crisps but then I learnt at school about how bad it can get, so I went onto healthy stuff like apples and bananas".

Phunky Foods was mentioned in my recent Ofsted report. I use my phunky foods training and resources for the breakfast and after school club which I run at school - a couple of weeks ago, Ofsted came to inspect. Our provision for 'helping children to be healthy' was considered 'outstanding', the report says: 'the school is part of the Phunky Foods project and the out of school club links in with this and plans activities to promote hygiene and personal care through fun and exciting game and artwork'.

PhunkyFoods Healthy Eating and Physical Activity is taught in Kingstone and Thruxton Primary School to approximately 185 childen during PPA time. The physical activity is enjoyed by all pupils and is really easy to deliver thanks to the easy to follow lesson plans. The new (2007) healthy eating resources are fantastic and very interactive which is great for the kids. We hope to use PhunkyFoods in the curriculum in the future and think the QCA linking facility will really help make this easier. The online tasting sessions have also been a big hit with the pupils allowing them to taste and see new foods.
